Subject: Unsolicited Testimonial for Headsets Inc!

After reading extensively about the new Bose X, I was convinced that I had to try the Bose. My other headset is DC 10-13.4 with the Headsets Inc. inserts. I did the install 3 years ago.

Results: The Bose is by far the most comfortable headset I have ever worn (they have the new lambswool headliner that eliminates some previous problems with scalp pinch). You really can hardly tell it's on.

For noise reduction, the Headsets Inc. inserts in my DC are actually quieter and have better sound than the Bose! That is subjective, in that the Bose has better high-frequency response, so you can hear the high notes in music better (music does sound better through the Bose, even with the wind noise at 150kts) but you also get all the hiss and whine and high piched squeal from my old Avioics. The Headsets Inc. inserts really amplify the voice-range frequencies better, and attenuate the high freqs - I didn't even know my Avionics had squeal and whine until I got the Bose. Maybe I'll get used to it, but I find it a nuisance to listen to.

So for comfort and music, the Bose win. But for communication clarity and noise reduction, the Headsets Inc. inserts in my old trusty DC's is much superior. And isn't that why we use them? Music is nice, but talking to the tower is the mission. And save a G.

I was so convinced that I would want the Bose that I got the panel powered version (everyone told me that 20 hours on the battery was optimistic in a noisy cabin, 10 hours was more like it) so after spending four hours wiring the darn thing I am not ready to send them back, yet.

Dear Sir or Madam:

We purchased two of the Headsets Inc. kits for our two David Clark headsets and installed them without any difficulty.

After months of research and buying and returning all the major noise canceling headsets, it was amazing to hear the difference. Your system was clearer, quieter and better stereo quality than any of them including David Clark and Bose!!

Thank you,

Wow!

I have used David Clark headsets for 15 years and would not want to think what my hearing might be today had I not worn them. But a couple months ago I ordered your ANR kit and the optional combo cable. It went together reasonably well, and I was anxious to try it.

Once again - Wow! After wearing the Headsets Inc. modified DCs for a few minutes I turned the ANR off, and could not believe the difference. My wife put them on and complained about the little crackles we got from a distant Unicom transmission. Ha, those noises were always there but we could never hear them over the drumming of the engine and prop. The improvement of the basic David Clarks over bare ears was easily equaled by the improvement of the Headsets ANR over the basic DCs.

A very fine product and well worth the price.

I recently purchased one of your anr headset conversions. Just wanted to let you know how this came out. Basically, the conversion was only minimally difficult for a non-technician like me. The only difficult part was 1) no pictures with the instructions, only text. 2) Soldering the wires to those close-together-tiny-little holes in the PC boards was a bitch! Remember who you are dealing with here, we're klutzes! I would have liked to have had those holes more spread out.

Those are only mild complaints, though. I wanted really to tell you they work great! I can't believe how fantastic this is. A friend of mine has a pair of Bose ANR's he was trying to sell for a $1000 (he's a "dealer") and my converted Dave Clarks are EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS THE BOSE'S!!!!!!!! Why isn't the whole world beating a path to your door?! I read a magazine article on your kit last week and they were lukewarm about them. "Not as good as a Bose ... too loud when turned of ... yadda, yadda, yadda ...." How much did Bose pay these guys? You guys need more marketing. If you need testimonials ... here I am!

Dear Matt:

I wanted to thank you for your assistance with troubleshooting my ANR headset conversion. The little tests that you recommended did the trick and led me to correct a couple of wiring errors. After that, the headsets worked great and the ANR feature is wonderful. These converted SoftComms are as good as the ANR David Clarks and the Bose sets that I have. I purchased the Bose for my wife because they are the most comfortable for her but I like the converted SoftComms best myself. Needless to say, I am very pleased at the value of this conversion because it works so well.

I have one suggestion that you might consider in a future version of your instructions. It would be helpful to include a few simple ohmmeter tests at the end of your instruction book so that when one is done with the wiring, they can run simple tests on the audio power and mike plugs and recheck their wiring before they power it up. Your "simple tests" will quickly identify a wiring error and, while I perhaps should have been able to figure that out, it just didn't occur to me.

I enjoyed the conversion process. It was also a great project. Long enough to be a fun challenge but not long enough or so difficult as to be boring. Thanks for your help and for marketing such a great product.

Sincerely,

James M. Fox

This is the extra speaker assembly that you shipped to me when we thought the first one was lost in the mail. Truth is that I had the wrong zip code on my letterhead, a combination of my work and home zip code, so all this trouble has been my fault all along. Sorry for that.

However, I have finally finished the installation and the headsets work better than I could have ever expected. After starting the C-172 I fly, I got the ATIS, called ground, and started to taxi out before I remembered to turn on the headsets power. I was astonished. In an instant the hum of the idling engine was reduced to a quiet hiss. The change was almost the same as going from a noisy airplane to using headsets in the first place. I look forward to using these headsets for a long time and will be purchasing another set for my Clark H10-20's. I'm sure the installation will be better than on my 5DX's.

Thanks again for all your trouble and patience. You make a great product.

Thanks again,

Dear Sirs,

The conversion of my first headset, a Clark H13.4, has been terrific. I have now used the converted headset for about 100 hours, and prefer it to the Bose and the Telex ANR 4000, both of which I have had the chance to compare directly at some length in my own airplane - a very noisy C310R. (The extended nose of the -R model acts as a megaphone for the propeller noise.) The very effective low frequency noise cancellation makes the intelligibility of the Headsets, Inc. conversion superior to both of these expensive alternatives. At the same time, the ability to retain the comfort and quality of the basic Clark headset design in your cost-effective ANR package makes them truly a pleasure to use hour after hour.

Sincerely,

I installed your ANR unit in my Headset about a month ago. OK first of all your instructions were really easy to follow. It took about 1 1//2 hours to install the unit.

Anyway, I did it!! AND "WOW! WOW! WOW!!!" I did compare my headset with my friend's David Clark H10-13XL, ("in actual Flight conditions") and the only difference that I did notice was the "PRICE".

Dear Fellow Pilots

Exactly one year ago I purchased one of your ANR Kits for a Dave Clark H10-40. Although we had some unpleasant e-mail exchanges about delivery time, shipping cost, etc., you finally managed to ship the kit in a suitable manner.

Now, one year and fifty flight hours later, I would like to give you a customer's comment on the product.

Noise reduction: excellent, much better than expected

Installation of the kit: feasible, but slightly more complicated than expected but very good instructions

Product quality: excellent, very good material

Best regards,

Dear Headsets Inc.,

As a satisfied customer, I figured I would send you kudos on your product (like every one else in your testimonial page). As a photo pilot that can spend up to 5 hours a day in the plane (Cessna 320), I have learned that engine noise becomes a huge factor in terms of fatigue. I upgraded my CD H10-80's about a year ago and have not had a day where I regretted the decision. The only problem I have with your product is that I did not get it sooner. I often let others in the plane, who happens to fly with me, try them out. They are amazed at the difference. My co-pilot/photographer was so impressed that he bought a set the next day. Matter of fact, I will probably be getting another kit - my wife is insisting on one for her headset after hearing mine.

Installation was easy as long as things were kept in order and done in the order specified in the instructions (this is a hard thing for me - I usually considered instructions as packing material and have regularly just jumped into a project with no guidance). I have also found that in my unit that 9 volt batteries seem to last a little longer than advertised. Very few of my batteries are new, most are pulled from smoke detectors after a year's use. I find that they still last at least a month. I did try those fancy new $$$$ titanium batteries with little luck. They seemed to last no longer than the used alkalines I got from the detectors. Keep this in mind as most people simply throw away these batteries since they assume they are shot. I keep a constant supply from family, friends, neighbors, etc.

One last thought ... I have heard many people suggest that ANR is dangerous due to the possible cancellation of any warning horns (aka gear, GPWS, etc.). With my set on, I hear individual switches on the radio panel, the camera firing it's shutter (and it sits about 4 feet behind me), and quite often, the Nintendo game that my photographer plays when he is bored (he sits behind me).

Thank you for a great product! Definitely the best money I have spent on any aviation gadget.

Sincerely,

Scott Krugerud

Dear Sirs:

I received my order for the Peltor adapters last Friday afternoon and with the good instructions and ease of assembly, I had it installed forty-five minutes later. It would have probably taken less time if I had better soldered the new crossover to the old. As it was, I had to fish the new crossover through.

It worked right out of the box and when I flew yesterday, I was absolutely impressed with the noise cancellation achieved. When BOSE first came out with their ANR headsets a very good friend ordered two so that we could fly in comfort in his Trinidad. We made five cross-countries from Great Barrington (GBR) to Santa Fe (SFE), while there was good ANR the headsets were hot and heavy. My friend later sold the BOSE headsets and purchased Peltor ANR's with the cigarette lighter power supply. They were comfortable and lightweight but the cigarette lighter adapter was always a nuisance.

A few years ago I purchased my Peltor headset for their low weight and comfort. Your kit has made them better, I think, than the ANR Peltor's my friend has.

I have, of course, showed my improved headset to my EAA Chapter members and you should get an order or two out of them.

Thanks again,

Ed Booth

I just thought I would report my results in shopping for an ANR headset at Oshkosh. My brother and I tried at least 5 different models of ANR headsets (David Clark, Peltor, Sigtronics, etc.). Your retrofit kit BY FAR was the best sounding ANR headset we tried, and when we get ready to buy, your kit is what we are going to purchase. I will refit my Sigtronics S-45's and my brother will retrofit whatever headset he winds up with.

We will be talking to you soon.

Dear Sirs:

Per our conversation today, I'm enclosing one left unit for exchange. The speaker is open and not 300 ohms as I first indicated. I must have read the other side when it was in the circuit.

Thank you for your help regarding the tone differences. It may be better for noise canceling, but with my hearing, the clarity is better if I have a higher pitch tone. I am still very pleased with these units, and will recommend them to all I encounter.

I purchased your basic ANR kit at Oshkosh 2000. Upon arriving home and reading the directions, I discovered I could obtain an integrated 9V/audio mic. cable for a much more professional look. I ordered the cable. I was initially intimidated by the task, but after reading through the instructions twice and calling to ask a question from your excellent technical support service, I installed the modules and cable in about 1 1/2 hours at my kitchen table.

I used my "new" ANR headset throughout my instrument training (I passed my checkride yesterday) and the results were astounding. I was far less fatigued after flying for greater periods than with my "old" headset. Flying with friends and on Civil Air Patrol missions, I have had the opportunity to compare your product with several factory ANR headsets costing substantially more ... your ANR modules enable my headset to equal some and better than most other ANR headsets on the market. Thanks for a superior product.

A couple weeks ago I installed your kit- a pair of DC 10-13.4. After test, I stuffed them in my bag, content on using my Lightspeeds, thinking that I'd offer the DC's to my passengers. A week later during a long cross-country flight in my usually loud Mooney, the three of us got to chatting about our ENC headsets. Tow of us had Lightspeed 20's and my nephew had his DC with your kit. We got to swapping them around and after much cord tangling and multiple tries, we came to the conclusion ... Your kit in his DC's were the quietest.

The Lightspeeds have your beat hands down in the comfort level, but you do have a fair product. Perfect for us who already have too much invested in their overpriced DC's. My only comments are that with the original price of the DC's, along with the price of your kit ... I could have gotten another Lightspeed 25!

Thanks!

Headsets Inc.,

I recently sent my David Clark 20-10S set to your for ANR installation after I was suffering temporary hearing loss from tow pilot flying. Currently, I fly tow in Piper Pawnees and a Super Cub for three gliding clubs of the Colorado Front Range and one Commercial Operator in Boulder. Pawnees and Supercubs are both loud in the cockpit, with one of the aircraft I operate having no mufflers due to its remote operation and need for better engine cooling.

I can't tell you how happy I am with your product's performance and how true your claims are and your customer testimonials are. My hearing no longer suffers from 5-6 hours of droning noise and the over all clarity of the radio transmissions I can now hear is remarkable. This is particularly important at 1V5 where there can be six tow planes, many gliders, and all the normal power traffic to contend with on a busy day. When I do fly in quieter trainer type aircraft, the performance is even better.

After seeing my father suffer some hearing loss from a career in aviation, I highly recommend any pilot to purchase your conversion. The craftsmanship was excellent on the factory install and some of the other pilots at one of the glider ports are asking to borrow my head set now, due to the club's ANR Bose set having no where near the performance of mine. An optional clip on the rear of the battery box would help us tail dragger pilots out some.

Subject: Purchase of an ANR Adapter

Dear Jan,

Many thanks for your prompt response of 12 August to my inquiry for an ANR adapter.

I contacted Global Aviation in Brisbane by phone and received excellent service, good technical advice about the installation of a unit and quick delivery by courier service (less than 24 hours after placing my order). I also followed their advice to purchase Gel Flow Earseals for my 10 year old Clark H10-40.

Bearing in mind that I am not an electrical or electronics expert and that I have had very little soldering experience, I was very apprehensive about tackling the installation myself. However I followed the instructions exactly and to my delight the modified headset works perfectly.

I tested the Headset with my Mooney in flight today. I was able to compare it with a friend's Bose Headset. Neither my friend nor I could tell the difference!

Dear Sir:

I have just finished installing my third Headsets, Inc. kit and I am truly impressed.

I would have a fourth installation, but one of my sons purchased a noise-canceling headset for me a while ago and it is satisfactory. I only occasionally fly with four occupants and I see no need for anything special.

What I am really writing about are the instructions that are included reminding us that gel seal cushions are mandatory to obtain the maximum noise reduction. Apparently, I have strange bone structure, because when I turn my head in either direction, I always have an air leak with the gel seals. I have changed to Flightcom Comfort Seals which stops these air leaks. I do not perceive any apparent difference in the noise reduction. I have only my ears to go by and they are not very scientific, but I am going to continue to use the Comfort Seals just to stop the annoying air leak when I move my head.

I think you have a great product. I also think that this is the only way to go about making the cockpit less noisy. Forget all the fancy insulations; forget the 1/4 inch windshield and the side windows; and also, forget about some fancy A.D. prone inflatable door seal(s).

Just some thoughts from a very satisfied user for you to consider.

Sincerely,

Robert B. Fox

Since receiving my modified David Clark headset from your firm, I have used it about 8 hours and am very pleased with the noise reduction as perceived by my 63-year-old ears.

A fellow pilot who flies an ultralight tried them on while in a 1980 C-172 and requested information about you. I gave him the literature that you included with my headset and I'm certain he will become another customer.

Hello!

I purchased one of your kits a little while ago and installed it in a David Clark H10-13.4 which I compared with a David Clark 10-13XL ANR I've used over 2 years and 200 hours of flying. Being identical headsets except for the ANR circuitry, I felt this would be a fair comparison.

A friend of mine tried both of the headsets in a Pitts Special S-IT, perhaps one of the noisiest aircraft ever built. He found the David Clark '13XL an annoyance and had to turn it off. It couldn't keep up with noise and caused a regular thrumming as it cut in and out.

In contrast, the 10-13 upgraded with your kit did such a good job he's asked me to order a kit and install it for him!

Thus far, I've only worn "the Gizmo" as my friend dubbed it, in a C172, but I've been so pleased with them I'm selling the H10-13XL. I hope to hear the result myself when I go up in a Pitts S-2 and a Stearman that fly out of my airport. Based on my friend's experience in the Pitts, I expect very good results.

Many thanks! I'm looking forward to dealing with you folks in the future.

Just a note of thanks for the great product. I had a chance to flight test my new ANR kit this weekend and I was very surprised. I have to admit that my expectations were not very high. I was testing my old RST kit headsets and your ANR kit against some Lightspeed 20's in a very noisy homebuilt. I was very pleasantly surprised. With a new set of Oregon 3/4 inch soft seals, my kit builds were as good if not better than the Lightspeed 20's. My mic. was significantly better which also surprised me. With the addition of a new Oregon head pad I think my 10-year-old dirt cheap kit built headsets have been saved from the dump and I've saved hundreds of dollars. I'm telling everyone I know to save their old headsets and give you a call.

My only improvement comment would be to add a small LED to the power pack to indicate the unit is on. The switch is easy to flip and the markings on the switch are very small and sometimes hard to remember if (o) is Off or On. Some kind of auto shutoff would be even better.

Thanks again!!!!!

Gentlemen:

NIGHT AND DAY!!! That's the difference that your product made. I am flying an Extra 300S which is not particularly quiet considering that it is an aircraft with just the bare essentials being dragged around by a 300 horsepower AEIO540 with headers. I have been wearing earplugs underneath my headset which has been a pain and not very effective. I noticed your add in Trade-a-Plane and thought I would give it a try. I am very pleased to say that you probably saved my hearing for $179.00 ... pretty good deal, I think. When I cranked up this morning for the first time, I had the switch off, and hand the usual rumble, which I enjoy until the power comes up to the forward stop. Then I switch on the ANR and it's as if the engine failed. All I heard was the swish of the prop. Your ANR seems to be very effective right in the frequency range that I needed some suppression. As I took off, someone transmitted and it about blew me out of the cockpit, since the usual setting on my com radio is almost full up. Now the sidetone and incoming transmissions are crystal clear and my radio is set at less than half volume. Installation was made simple by the color-coded wiring diagram, and it turned out looking very professional.

Thanks for saving my hearing and a couple hundred dollars to boot!

Gentlemen:

Recently I purchased one of your active noise reduction module kits for a headset I wear in a VERY NOISY environment of a 150 hp Tri-Pacer. The background noise of that place at cruise measures 110db.

My Sigtronics headsets were purchased as kits, so wiring is nothing new to me. Your kit went in without a hitch and everything worked perfect the first time.

I'd like to say something great about your noise reduction kit, but all that comes to mind is WOW!

Thanks for a great product! I know flying is going to be even a greater experience now with your noise reduction headset installation kit.

Well, I just have to give you some praise. I've been flying with your ANR kit for nearly three years and I'm completely satisfied. The kit is installed in my Peltor 7003 and adds quite a lot to my flying experience. The droning low-frequency sound mostly disappears, making the flying a lot less tiresome. In addition I hear ATC instructions much better. I actually feel that I hear any missounds much better as well. For example, the slight squeak in the rudder pedals of one machine I sometimes rent.

The really big payoff has been in towing gliders, where I fly a PA18 with a 180 HP engine conversion all day. Really makes you shake.
